me and 2 mates want to buy an old shed / barge to take on a road trip down eastern europe for a copule of weeks.
the problems we have are
- Vehicle, oldish hopefully diesel or 2.0 petrol. hopefully an estate
- insurance, dayinsure.com do it cheaply, but the car has to be 1993, although this isnt a major thing. any other ideas for short term cover?
- we want to spend £600 - £1000
so the ideas are volvo 240, VW passat, Renault Laguna etc etc
any ideas or suggestions are welcome!

yeah i think an m5 touring is out of the question, just got a temp quote for £145 for 2 drivers for 2 weeks! thats on a p reg volvo estate thingy, this is looking like a definate now!

yeah have a route plan, quite long but here me out:
My house - dover = 70 miles
dover - calais = N/A
Calais - Brussels (Belgium) = 130 miles
Brussels - Frankfurt (Germany) = 220 miles
Frankfurt - Prague (Cezch republic) = 210 miles
Prague - Bratislava (Slovakia) = 200 miles
Bratislava - Budapest (Hungary) = 100 miles
Budapest - Zagreb (Croatia) = 200 miles
Zagreb - Moribor (Slovenia) = 100 miles
Moribor - Wolfsberg (Austria) = 160 miles
Wolfsberg - Udine (Italy) = 70 miles
Udine - Venezia (Italy) = 150 miles
Venzia - verona (Italy) = 75 miles
Verona - Milan (Italy) = 75 miles
Milan - Zurich (Switzerland) = 120 miles
Zurich - Dijon (France) = 165 miles
Dijon - Paris = 160 Miles
Paris - Calais = 160 Miles
Calais - Dover = N/A
Dover - Home = 70 miles
Total miles = 2285 across 11 countries
Very basic MPG Calculations: @ 38 MPG = 217.66 litres of fuel @ 85p litre
= £185 fuel
Therefore:
Car: £500
Insurance: £145 (likely to go up.)
Fuel: £185 (likely to go down)
Ferry: £124
Total travelling expenses:
£954
divided by three : £318
pretty cool eh? mileage is over approximated atm, will be accurate and confirmed when my mates agree on the route.
fuel calculation is wild, could be a lot less, e.g. diesels etc etc
we are planning a further £500 personnal spending money

we are planning tents, where possible, in extreme cases we have a list of youth hostels in major towns and cities across europe, yeah i know about fuel prices will be cheaper but its a rough estimation
might make a detour to the nurbergring (sp), do it in the volvo estate lol

Get something where parts are readily available across Europe. I'd recommend VW or Mercedes.

It is a good laugh - We drove to Barcelona at Easter in a hire car! You just dont realise how tiring it is and how much you do actually spend! Dont forget the tolls either!!!!!

Mint car. That will be very comfy. Expensive if something goes wrong though. I suppose you could always dump the car and get a flight home

£740, bargain and a half, had one window which didnt work, we have fixed that now, and the passenger side front door has been keyed, but not badly.

yeah thats the idea, thats if we make it home, we should do though, this thing is the best built car I have ever seen, there are parts of it that look new because all the seals are so well built. and the thing isnt very complex either, i am most definately in love

thats pretty cool dude
did something similar a few months back, drove from Bedford to Casablanca and back (just over 2000miles there and 1800 miles back, shorter route) in 7 days, all in a 100 quid car covered in fur, was awesome
But you will spend a lot, fuel isn't that much cheaper in the EU and nor is food/hotels etc We spent near enough £2500 (inc car, fuel, food, hotels etc) between 2 of us for that 7 days.
Have you thought about hitting the south of france, say Millau and seeing the Viaduc De Millau? Lovely place and the bridge is pretty damn impressive
