VBulletin is apparently very slow compared to here. Ask Ian what he runs. As this is the fastest site I go on, and I am very impressed and never have complaints

Yeah XMB but we did a lot of database work to ensure that queries are all indexed properly and not doing anything too intensive.
The speed is really a factor of programming which we hacked out a lot of crap, databases which we redesigned a bit and a fast dedicated server on a good connection. You need all of those bits really.
What exactly is the problem with the site? If its speed then you need to know where the problem is.

vb is gay, and you have to pay, (hey that rhymes)
if you want a quick overhaul to how it looks download a theme from http://www.phpbb-design.com
i would advise learning php yourself though, im a big fan of starting out with something as basic as possible then making the features you want yourself, that way you can make it just how you want and not bloat it out with unnecessary code and queries.
Here is a good example of what can be done, also have a look at mine if you want more ideas.
phpbb3 is also out, im not keen, but check it out its very modern and slick

iv installed a downloaded copy, didnt pay for it, theres loads of queries going on that if you dont want or need just serves to slow things down, also any vb forums iv used tend to be slow and clunky, i dont think its software worth its price tag
installing a new style takes about 5 minutes from that site mate
