ICV can cause problems like this. And the Speed sensor.
Does it do it when you push the clutch in? i.e. coming to a junction.

90% sure it'll be the Vehicle Speed Sensor

Never had a VSS fault myself, but that may be part of the problem. Car doesn't know what it's doing.

Use carb cleaner. The ICV is located on the side of the throttle body.
Is it a 16 valve?

Take off top inlet manifold, then you can see the throttle body. The ICV is a small black cylinder thats held onto the TB with 2 torx screws. Take it off, then spray the passage with carb cleaner and clean up the ICV. Never done one on a standard engine so i'm not sure if the TB needs to be taken off.
If your worried the ICV might be fucked mate, best off to just swap it for a new one.

ok cheers mate.one other thing though.someone also mentioned that you can put brake fluid down one of the valves, then really rev the engine and thick smoke will come out but will clean all the valves when your doing this.ever heard this?
