Well a 1.4xe Corsa has been bought for £70

Head gasket blown. I was going to repair but changed my mind.

and managed to get my hands on a X18XE.

Have been reading about the conversion of the 20XE and have never seen any body put my engine in. Let alone it being in a 5 door.
Any tips would be greatfully appreciated.

Engine hoist should be with me within the next couple of days. I am at a bit of a loose end as cant start stripping the rest of the old engine and drive shafts out as I need the car to still move so we can get the new engine out of the boot. (Well it seemed a good idea at the time and it took 4 of us to get it in there)
Picked up timing belt today as one of my major prioritys.
Will take photos when the project starts to build momentum.
All coments greatfully received.

did u get the engine cheap or wot made u go for that engine??

how many bhp etc is the 1.8??

ive got a feelin im gonna like this project

I may be wrong if I am can some one please correct me but I think its in the region of 115BHP.
I have been very fond of this web site. It makes a very good read. There is a lot of projects on here
I would love to do a 2.0 but thought I wonder if there is another engine I could use
The 1.8 was on ebay and for £100 with gearbox and loom with ecu I thought its got to be worth a punt.

Depends on the year of the engine. Sept 00 the power went up to 125 BHP.

Another option could have been X20XEV Clicky Clicky. That has 134 BHP.

Well managed to get the engine and box out of the corsa.
Timing belt been done.

After giving it a look over it doesnt seem to be in bad nick.
A bit of oil on the gearbox but nothing a steam clean wont sort out. Will leave that till it is a up and running.
Having thoughts about the pulley. Will it clear the chassis rail?
Also thinking about installing a non PAS rack. Just to keep it simple. The PAS pump on the old block has the same inlet and outlet ports in the same position so would not be any trouble changing it.

Well stripped car down ready for the big heavho of the 1.4 bottom end and gear box
The brake pads were shocking> not to bad a strip down. Could not remover near side drive shaft so has no choice but to drop it rather than lift it out as I had hoped.




Just need to give it a little clean up then will be hoisting it in tomorrow to see what problems I have to deal with.

Well good day today




Its 1 thing reading about the conversion but doing it is another thing.
Gear box engine mount lines up but the other 2 will have to be sourced.
The alternator is just catching the but that could be because the engine isnt sitting at the right hight. Fuel lines connected as are all engine cabeling.

Have decided to remove the pas and get a manual steering rack. Seems a lot of trouble keeping it, the rubber pipework is a bit to close to the exhaust manifold. Some of the pipe work is looking a bit crusty. Will remove the engine again to make things simple. I have a clear picture in my head what I have to do.
Good job im on holiday next week.
Just waiting on the rest of the conversion bits. mounts, hubs and driveshafts that im getting from a member on here.
Then its just a case of uprating the discs and pads. Suspension will be later. Just want to get it running.
Any coments or suggestions greafully received.

Well done as much as I can until vital left mount turns up.
Engine has been taken back out and pas rack ras been removed

Wiring loom for alternator, started and oil pressure has been separated from the car and attached to the engine
Also got the new aux belt sized

Just need to find some sort of adjuster.
Rear gear box mount has been modified. Have taken some material away where it was catching on the gearbox and had a friend jim welded it back up for strength. (thanks Jim)


New sterring rack should be here begining of week providing it doesnt come via royal mail.

Well what can I say im gutted.
Just received email from the guy selling my steering rack to be told it is coming via royal mail and wont be sent till Wednesday.

The second slap top the face still havent heard from the person supplying the bits to make the job complete.
Come on fella. If you are reading this please get it stripped.

The only thing I have done today is sort the rust out on the crossmember, spray up the engine mount and painted the exhaust manifold in VHT.

Only really good news today is the car is insured with the engine in.

I knew I should have gone to church on Sunday. Pi@"ed off. You better belive it.
Fingers crossed things start moving by the end of the week.

Well great day today. Royal mail showd up with my manual steering rack and vital left engine mount.
Fitted the steering rack first then set on the engine.

Left mount

Right mount (gearbox)

Rear mount (gearbox)

To my surprise exhaust lines up.

Then old loom was stripped from the car and new one installed

Just one question the fan for the radiator will not reach. Stripped the plug from the old loom to extend it but the wires as switched. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

nice progress mate..

get some stikaflex in the mount's to stiffen then up, make's it much better

Got all water hoses done and the engine is filled with water. Engine oil and filter changed.
I have managed to locate to radiator fan leads and am left with the 2 pin wire from the previouse thread. Looks similar to EGR plug??
Have wired the 9 pin plug (corsa loom) that sits in the foot well to the corrosponding wires from the new engine.
Have taken a live to the battery and feed it to the red wire in the block and it blows the 50amp fuse.
Any ideas guys.

Sorted the problem out with the electric. I grounded a black wire which just happend to be main power for the car. How stupid do I feel. I have power in the car and the engine will crank. Would not fire as I have no power going to the fuel pump. I realised that I was using my uncoded key.
Just got the battery on charge and hopefully it should fire tomorrow.

Any ideas guys. My car is a M reg and the engine came out of a N reg Astra. If my key is coded is it coded to the loom or to my old ECU will it work with the new ECU. I no most immobilisers either cut power to the fuel pump or starter.

All wired up. The ECU doesnt seem to be powering up. Come on peps any ideas.
The red lead in the 9 pin plug (corsa loom) is already receiving power. This is suppose to be text book

Green - revcounter feed,

Brown/Blue - ECU light, match to corsa plug
Brown/White - Diagnostics, match to corsa plug
Brown/Yellow - Diagnostics, match to corsa plug

Blue/red (thick) - Fuel pump feed, match to corsa plug

Blue - Coolant temp sensor feed for dash clocks, match to plug

Red/Blue (thin) - electronic speedo feed, match to corsa plug

Red (large) - Battery +ve

Black (thin) - Battery ?ve I moved this inside and matched it to the corsa plug


Somebody please please help.

My car hasnt got one. the key has no chip in it. Could you please tell me where it would connect to on the astra loom.

Done it again

No wonder the ECU wasnt powering up. This 2 pin plug contains the leads that require ignition and battery feeds. I feel like such a twat
Any way extended that leads and wired them into the 9 pin plug.
I also added a gearbox 2 body earth strap.
I now have a fully working ECU and Fuel pump relay.
Engine starts but cuts out.
I checked all HT leads for spark all ok.
Checked timing and oh dear out a little. by about a tooth
Picked up a astra Haynes manual today to stop any future confusion
Will retime it tomorrow and hopefully it should start and run.
With the ECU checking the timing on the camshafts and crank no way was it going to start.

Well looks like the ecu is immobilized. Engine check light flashes when key is inserted into the ignition barrel. If i take the transponder away from the barrel it will start then cut out. Will either need to get ecu recoded or find a second hand one with transponder and key which contains the coded chip.
The guy that was suppose to be supplying my conversion parts has let me down so collectiong drive shafts, hubs and 2 litre calibra discs and calipers all for £60 and hes local to. (bonus)
Will be collecting friday and hopefully get the car back on the ground asap.
Have been neglecting my family so thats it from me for a little while.

Have picked up astra MK2 hubs shafts and calibra disks and calipers with pads.
Picked up 2 VW MK2 golf front bearings 1987 and they fit in to the corsas knuckles and the astra hubs will need to be machined a little bit to fit.

Have cleaned and repacked the cvs with grease.

Have dropped caliper carriers, disks, hubs, knuckles and bearings to my machinest and recons they will be done in a few days. Have left him everything so he can mock it all up just to make sure he has taken enough of the hubs.

As for the immobilser problem. The ecu is being recoded as we speak. I aim to have the car on the road in 2 weeks.

Its all looking promising.
