Well done.

I used to work in a learning centre doing IT Support. I now work there in the evening teaching CCNA and there are two ladies who have been doing ECDL for over 2 years.....

You get 3 years max!

I wouldn't employ someone to any sort of job that involved more than basic computer use if they had added that as a qual on their cv, lucky i'm not in a position to employ anybody.

Well is there surely not a progressive follow through of qualifications of which you can add to your CV to show the level of expertise you happen to have in the general computing field?

Working on computers can range from all kind of things, alot of people who mainly use CAD programs might never use word for example. Or prehaps they might not necessarily know how to set up a basic network, or configure a complete manual network, or use telnet / ssh. OR know how file sizes are defined, of what bit parity checking is. I guess some of it comes under the Computer Practitioner course. But it would be nice to be able to show a broader level of understanding of using and abusing computers.

Its nice to see ECDL as you know people are at a certain level. A lot of people come in to my college wanting to go on courses and say they've been messing around on computers or they're interested in them. Doesn't really mean much.

Obviously if the job is more specialist then it's not the last word in IT competence but it's worth having.

Yip I can certainly see the reason for it, handy to let employers know that they can at least use a computer.

I thought you were from a web design background or something though drax?

If you were applying for a web job i'd expect you to have at least that standard.

I am from a design background, I dont have that single qualification though. The multimedia course I have done had a small segment of web design in it.

But ive been doing web design, and dabbled in web development for at least 5 years.

I list what areas of experience I have on my CV which kind of shows what level im at with working with computers. Im guessing GCSE IT covers more than this then, and is used for people who are the older generation and wouldnt have been exposed to computers as much ?

It's nice to see that the CAD ECDL only covers 2D modelling. Nice an out of data, plus, totally useless
