You can hack the firmware to run homebrews..etc
You'll need to downgrade the firmware to 1.5 (I think it is?)
And you'll need to buy a large memory card to download them onto 
Theres a website somewhere regarding all this as I did my brothers a year or 2 ago.

You can download the games onto the Xbox's hard drive. There is hacked firmware out for this or perhaps a mod chip named Xtreme as far as I'm aware.
Although be warned, once you do it theres no going back, warrenty is void.
You can still play on xbox live though, I play on it when I can and my dads a regular (lol go dad!) some of his friends are playing games before they are even out because they've downloaded them.
