I get this error coming up when i try opening MPEG files,
Been happening for a while now, any ideas?
And when i play an AVI file, it says its tryin to 'aquire codec'
Then after a few seconds it just plays the sound with the WMP visualisation(sp)

Download this VLC Media Player (clickable), install it and see if it works. If it doesnt then i suspect you have lost a codec somewhere and will need to download a few freebies off the net, but give this a go first, media player is shite for 'media' anyway

Thats not solved your problem tho has it 
Install a codec pack and media player will play anything.
Google: Kazaa Lite Codec Pack
VLC is excellent tho.
