I can get into MSDOS via a windows 98 bootable cd and i have formatted c: but once in when i put my xp cd and try to run setup it says that it can't be run in msdos. any ideas? i've tried booting from the XP but it says boot record not found.

Download the Windows XP ISO again and put it on a bootable CD... there will be an option to make it bootable

tried that, it asks for a bootable image so i used BOOTFIX.BIN from in the i386 file on the ISO, when i booted it said press return to boot but didnt do anything Theres another file in there called SETUPLDR.BIN but it can only use one image for the boot

Get a proper bootable CD and boot to it. You don't need to mess about with DOS prompts and the like if you can do this.
If its not working make sure it's burned as bootable and your boot sequence in the BIOS is correct.
