Been doing some research on the internal differences and external differences, mainly to see if MS has tried to solve the problems of old.

Here is my findings.

Both the CPU and GPU both sport different revision information on the chips but its hard to say whether or not 65nm has been implemented. One of the more interesting observations that seems to point to lower power consumption implying a possible 65nm core is the fact that there are some capacitors and transistors that have been removed on this revision of board.

Many speculate that because the die is not smaller its not the new core. One argument against this theory is this; if the power requirements drop by half and the die size surface area to dissipate heat is decreased by half; it really is not more thermally efficient. There is a good article at overclockers.com about this topic here. It makes sense to actually change the transistor size but keep the larger die.

Original Chip

Elite Chip

Next, I wasted no time in removing the CPU and GPU heat sinks as I was dying to know if they had implemented the anticipated 65nm CPU core.

Take a look at the animated gif below and note the lack of the yellow capacitors above the GPU and CPU and the fact that there is half as many transistors on the right hand side of the board where most of the voltage regulation goes on. This seems to be most telling sign of a possible new core.

One of the most important and sought after addition to the Xbox 360 Elite is the new 120 GB HDD. Finally some space to save all of the paid content your heart desires. We disassembled the drive and found a Fujitsu MHW2120BH 120GB drive inside. Our initial attempts at dumping sector 16 using The Specialist's hddhacker application was not a success.

It appears that the tool does not yet support the new 120GB drive. Without the sector 16 you will not be able to upgrade your stock 20GB drive to 120GB the cheap way. We will keep you posted on any changes to this situation.

You also get this

This is the audio breakout dongle included with the elite as well for those who want or need digital optical or analog audio outputs.

Once other small difference you will find is the fan header. It has been switched from a 4-pin Molex Mini-Fit connector to a standard good old three pin fan header style connector. This will render the Talismoon whisper fan useless without some sort of adapter. Fortunately the Llamma has solved this issue already and has the

Last but certainly not least is the key upgrade to the system; the HDMI port. This was the major let down of the Xbox 360 launch and a key difference between the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Finally the wait is over for those who want true 1080p without using the washed out VGA connection or dont have a TV with VGA or a 1080p compatible component input. There has been a million pictures of the HDMI port and HANA the HDMI scaler chip but here's a couple more for good measure.

This article was written near the launch of the 360 elite, and iv since had it confirmed to me by shop salesman that the later batchs definatly have the 65nm chips

No offence steve, but most of that is rubbish. First and foremost the 'shop salesman' probabaly wouldn't know what 65nm was even if it bit him in the arse. Someone like that is the last person on earth i'd trust for tech info like that.

Secondly. Those two pictures posted where you say 'Original Chip' and 'Elite Chip'. They look different for a good reason. One is the GPU and one is the CPU. They look different because they are completely different things in the first place.

Third. The gif of the two motherboards clearly proves than both chips are 90nm. There are some differences on the motherboard but the two dies are EXACTLY the same size. That 100% proves without a shadow of a doubt that both images are of 90nm cores. If one was 65nm and one 90nm then they would have to be different sizes. Its impossible for them not to be with a simple die srink. The core revision maybe have changed, but the process has not.

Lastly. The VGA washed out colour issue was fix about 6-9 months ago, long before the elite was released. I know this because i have used both component and VGA (and can still use both now) and they look near enough the same since they released the patch to fix the issue.

I'm really not sure where all this info came from but its nearly all wrong, that much is for certain.

agree with dark, the top pic is the CPU and the bottom one is the GPU - looking at the gif of the motherboard, you can clearly see that both CPUs look near enough identical.
And the difference in the motherboards (ie: less regulators, capacitors etc) is probably because the engineers have found that certain components aren't needed and that new versions of components means that can reduce the overall number of them etc etc

from what i've been reading, microsoft aren't going to release the elites with 65nm until after christmas and even then, no one knows if the new 65nm will solve the heating issues.
The whole red light business is the one thing thats stopping me getting the elite......

actually the top pic is the gpu, the bottom the cpu, i must admit i didnt look at the images very closely.

just been reading more from various sources, it seems the elites and later 360 premiums have a revised cooler thats actually bolted to the gpu and cpu to stop the rrod.

apparently falcon chips were shipped in units lot #734 or higher. haven't checked mine yet.

yea, i've read about the new coolers they've used but there doesn't seem to be a lot out that suggests that they've started to use the 65nm chips. It just seems to be the case that they are shipping out after xmas.

not upset at all, im quite happy to discuss ps3 or 360s and whether any of them are a piece of crap, but there is no need for it in this thread
