I currently have Vista on my pc, but i'm toying the idea of going back to XP. Wats peoples thoughts on both? My pc is a good spec but vista is just a hungry little bastard and i know xp will run faster than vista and is better supported. I can always go back to Vista when its been out longer.

Vista works fine.... I have been deploying it within my company for the past month and it works well.

Group policy disables indexing and visual styles which really aids performance.

As soon as SP1 is released I am going back to Vista on my laptop.

As far as needed more RAM I have read about the Readyboost feature that uses a USB memory stick as virtual RAM?

It doesn't really use that much more memory.

It runs faster with more memory and makes more efficient use of it.

thing i dont like about vista is everything you want if your changing techie stuff is so much more hidden away, and the profiles and where it stores certain files is cock eyed

Vista uses all the memory it can get its hands on, why not when its sitting unused.

It frees it up when something else needs it though.

been using vista for about a year now and wouldnt go back to XP.

If you have alot of RAM you can leave visual styles on, if you dont then turn it off.

If you have 1gb of RAM or less then consider using Readyboost (really cosider getting another stick of ram!) but it doesnt make a huge difference.

The thing is, everything people are saying and complaining about with vista is what they were saying 7 years ago with XP.
SP1 should be good.

Exactly!

I'm running a laptop with only 1gb and even with everything on, its not particularly slower than XP TBH. For normal, everyday tasks, its far better than XP. Love it

Disable indexing and precaching and it will be the same.

Ppl who say "ill wait until SP1" are very old fashioned.

I am working side by side with MS and ive seen the benefits of UAC and its worth being nagged for.

Vista is only RAM intensive when Aero is on due to each open window saving an uncompressed bitmap to RAM, which will be sorted soon but isnt a problem.
