I'm going to invest in a new camera because mine is getting on a bit.

My current camera is a Panasonic DMC-LZ1, I've had it since I was 18 and it's been fantastic, never let me down, I only want to upgrade because it's old and isn't as good quality as I'd now like.

So, obviously I quite like the idea of staying with Panasonic, but the only decent camera in my price range is the DMC-LX2.

On the face of it, it seems to be a pretty damn good camera, it does everything I want and more, but I'm thinking a DSLR might be available for similar money and probably better in the long run as I could buy new lenses etc?

Looking on ebay, it would seem I can get a Canon Eos 350D for about that

The ones on ebay come with an 18-55mm lense, what does this mean?

So anyway, which is better?

a) Decent point and shoot Panasonic for £250 + delivery
b) Low end (?) DSLR Canon for £280 + delivery.

There's loads of old pentax lenses in the loft, and some filters, solarisers etc, would these work with the 350D, or is it unlikely?

edit - just looked at lens compatibility and I'd need an adaptor.

The canon will probably last you longer but then again it depends what you want from a camera.

Do you want to spend lots on different types on lenses, fiddle around with the camera setting etc. If you're just going to leave the 350d in auto mode then there really isnt much point in getting the 350.

However if you're wanting to learn a little a bit about cameras etc the 350d would be a great starting point.

if you have loads of pentax lenses in the loft then get a pentax K100D super or save up some more and get the K10D

Just out of interest to you, in traditional printing, Solarisation is acheived by turning the light on off again in the dark room during the time the print is being exposed? Thats how they discovered it!
