With mine, i just took them out, gave them a clean because they were mega dirty then primered them up and sprayed them matt black.

Let dry and carefully pop back

I sprayed it matt black, so didnt opt for laquer, plus its inside and not exactly exposed to the elements is it.
I also did all my dash trim in matt black, and out of the whole car the only bit i laquered is the door handles (inside ones) to help from chipping them.
The laquer made a difference in the finish to the trim but doesnt look too bad, matt black looks better without laquer tbh since its meant to have a dull look.

If your painting for a gloss finish, then laquer required.
