.raw rather than .jpg, enables you a greater scale to edit, without degrading the image.

heres one I took before I came back down to Bournemouth over the xmas break:

You need a camera were you can control the shutter speed, you won't be able to do it with a normal point and shoot

Just as long as the camera has a manual mode which most advanced point & shoots do.

No need for juntions just try and find a busy stretch without street lighting and shoot at dusk.

marginally edited to remove imperfections and minor distractions. As for dark stretches of busy road, they tend to work better for long exposure traffic, purely because you get so much longer before the image becomes over exposed. You can successfully do illumiated areas long exposure, just the red gets lost a little.

Without whoring the thread and taking over here's one I did on an illuminated road and one on a carriage way.

Not my favourite photo, but it shows how the red slightly loses its intensity

This one worked out well, I was taking this from a darker position so I didnt get as much light shed on the lens from close up.

For me this image is a little over exposed and the lack of traffic moving away seems to ruin it a little, but you can see it's lost its intensity.

Its down to your aperture, ISO etc. In lit areas I tend to shoot on 100 ISO, smallest aperture and as for how long to expose? trial and error.

They're just all experimentation.

Try a larger F stop, and for longer. Lower ISO means a darker image, so you can expose for longer. I usually do mine on f 25 or something around there cant remem

Thats a lot better, maybe set up your camera, and trial different lengths of exposure. Even if they don't turn out to be the best as regards to the amount of traffic etc.

What light balance settings do you have on your camera? and can you shoot in .raw, I think you can if I remember correctly?

You need a smaller aperture i.e F8-11 or if you have a DSLR then F16-22. This will allow 25-30 sec shutter speeds.

Manual mode of course.

Also don't really on your cameras metering system at night as it rarly gives an accurate reading.
