Just bought an internal memory card reader which got delivered today.

I want to instll it in my dell desktop. The cable is set up as follows

[( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ]
[( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ]

however the usb controller connection on the mother board looks like this

[( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ]
[( ) ( ) ( )..... ( ) ]

How can I connect the two?

Is there an adapter avaliable? Is this another example of how dell's arn't upgradable ?!?!

Help me!!

I hate Dells, yet everyone raves about them. Everytime I've looked at upgrading something on them it's either special size power adapter this or custom plug in that. Piss me off.

Have a look at this it might help, also if you can get the motherboard layout it might also give you an idea of which pin is which etc..

If i was to smash the plug open and connect the wires to the pins, keeping the crimped ends, just without the plastic block, would this work?

Your memory card wiring all into a single block?. They usually have seperate pins for this very reason.

From reading a little on forums it seems the ports is not really a normal USB port it may be the 'Proprietary FlexBay header' this was designed so people would buy an optional 'DELL' card reader or other device that would plug straight in.

One of these might suit you
Plug in your pins to this, and route the other end back out of the case and into a normal USB port.

The usb headers on my non dell motherboard look like that, they have a pin missing so you always put it in the correct way.

If the pin is missing on the board just plug it in.
