Asked about this before but didnt get much of a response so Ian has suggested trying again, I havent got a clue about specs of PCs etc but i'm after a cheapish PC, it'll be used as a 2nd computer just need the actual box really not monitor etc, it will be used mainly for making backups of my DVDs and storing them on here to watch and also surfing the internet.
Ian has helped me out and suggested one of these desktops, and install a seperate DVDRW (below) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290194939329
http://www.computerplus.uk.com/product/product_detail.asp?productcode=DVDRW/PIO/112D-BK
quote:
I assume the wiring is the same, power will be not sure about data. It's two cables. Someone in GD will confirm I'm sure.
Thanks

wiring to the DVD drive? by the looks of it the cable in the computer is IDE, which will not be a problem, just make sure the drive you get is IDE and not SATA. i can't see anywhere on the link for the DVD drive where it says which connection is might be me being blind though

i know these are hard drives, but the connections are the same as DVD drives, if its IDE the connection will look like the bottom one, if its SATA the connections will looks like the top one.

tbh, at the moment the IDE drives are alot more common than SATA ones for DVD drives

How difficult would it be for me to put more memory on that PC, or would it be better for me to try and find one with more memory and the DVDRW already on it, I dont mind paying more than the £100 one that Ian found me by the way.

DDR memory is still readily available, but without knowing how many free slots there will be its hard to say how much you'll need etc

not really it has a small hard drive (to add another 200GB would cost you....£50/£60??) and only has 256mb of memory, so need to upgrade that too.
Also, its soo old it still has a printer port (serial?) which is how you connected printers before they were all USB and wireless now, so its old as well....

I messaged them on ebay to make sure that PC was ok and he sent me this reply.
Hello, What inputs do you have at the back of your TV? This computer has VGA output as standard, so if your LCD TV has VGA input then you will be able to connect them without any problems. Otherwise, you may need to purchase an adaptor. You will require a specialist graphics card to be able to back up DVDs. We do not stock and cannot supply these graphics cards, so you will have to purchase them from an alternative source. Other than those two points, your computer will do everything that you've mentioned without a problem.
