I heard the origional c16xe engine had 150bhp but was reduced because the c20xe was 150bhp. I was wondering if there are any pics or specs of the engine anywhere as i am quite interested in what they did, did they have a "powerbox" type inlet, high lift cams, polished head like ek9 civic type R's have as standard, 4 branch like the c20xe but better design etc etc

I dont think it would be that much. would have done well to loose 1/3 of an engines power

when lotus designed the engine it was over 150bhp, they reduce the power, but kept thge torque by using the stupid inlet design, that goes around the back of the engine...
reason for de-tune, is that vauxhall didn't want the corsa gsi faster than the current top sporty model - teh Astra mk3 GSI

According to the boys at work the original head had bigger valves, a more environmentally un-friendly camshaft profile and it had a totally different map.
Could all be hearsay tbh

Considering how easy it is to extract an extra 40bhp with a different inlet, cams and map, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Vauxhall/Lotus had managed it to begin with, Ford did the same with some of their engines, they had nearly 300bhp out of the box and they restricted them to 204/227 to sell them to the public, Renault did it too IIRC.

I actually know one of the engineers at Lotus that designed the c16xe, he also designed a lot of the the z18xe.
he now has his own engine building company. most of the claims made about the original c16 were false although it was making 140+ bhp he tells me

unfortunately no, I wish I did have. I do know that some cars in the Group N rally class many years ago managed to make 140 bhp with the standard inlet, plenty of torque too. never found out the spec though

Not only that, the GSI with the 150bhp C16 also gave worse fuel economy and the drive was not smooth and was quite lumpy to drive on the road.
As said, ran different higher lift cams, different inlet manifold system, different exhaust system, different fueling.
Not really much different from what people are doing today, just not as well.
