Nice cars but will be quite thirsty and cost a bit to run.
Plus you may get bored with a "grown up" car in terms of the way it drives etc
Drives supercharged Tec with torque

6 cylinders are thirsty, the 16v engines aren't. They're just slow, quite smooth but slow.

Very good car.
Don't expect to set any land speed records in one though.

i have a 320 and it gets 20mpg round town. Yes they are comfy etc and nice to drive, but is it what you want at 18?
If you buy a beemer, people jus tell you its your dads or ask if your a drug dealer haha, so boy racer/drug dealer, you choose which ud rather be

Not a lover of the 3 series saloon tbh, I like the coupes but the saloons just don't do it for me. Another thing to consider is that you'll always be getting the old 'how's daddy's car?' from the people who don't know you and just expect it's not yours. I know that can get annoying.

My brother had an E36 a while back, he was about 21 when he had it and loads of people didn't believe it was his, they tend to see the badge and think, he couldn't afford that, they seem to forget that even tho it's a BMW they do still drop in price

Definitely.
E46s are a lovely drive.
They don't look too dissimilar to the 36, but are a superior car to drive.

Front wishbones suffer with play after some time and clonk badly eventually and the power steering pump WILL stop working sooner or later.

parts can be expensive, but they are reliable, if its what you definately want, go for it

Reliability wise, we've had 3 BMW's in the family altogether, the first was fine, only problem we had was a leaky rad (apparently a common fault on the 3 series) that eventually led to my mum blowing the engine spectacularly, then we had to put a new one in. Then my brother's, he had it just short of 2 years and spent around £1800 fixing it, mainly little bits but lots of them, it seemed like I was forever working on it. Then there's my Dad's 7 series, never had any major problems I don't think, although it cost him about £500 to get it through it's last MOT, cause of a bush on the rear suspension, was quite a big job, so a big labour bill.
