My birthday in almost exactly a months time (23rd March ) and I'm thinking of asking for cash towards another camera.
Really like the Fuji S5700 I've got, really handy for carrying around and very impressed with the quality of shots but only really suitable for landscapes I think, certainly not fast enough for rapid shooting, or slow enough for time-lapse type things.
Basically, I'd like to get into more 'fast-paced' photography now. Thinking of taking it along to the football as well as track-days to get some car shots.
Can't really afford to push beyond £500 at the max though.
Any recommendations focussing on the above uses?
I know nothing really, I presume I'd need particular lenses and stuff for those kind of shots?
Any advice appreciated

Canon 400D, should leave you with a little left over to get some accessories. The standard lens will be fine for starting with.

I did think of that, not sure I can really stretch to £500 though TBH, depends what the family wants to give.
If I have enough, seems like a good idea.
You say D70(s) though, does that mean there is more than one camera?
Thanks, Hoddo, the 400d looks pretty good, and under budget

Not denying its a good deal, just might not be able to take advantage.....
Reviews say the 400d's supplied 18-55 lens is a bit crap. Would it be worth just going for the body and a better lens?

Probably mate, 18-55 will be a bit short to use a football.

Take it I want a long lens......
75-300mm?
But then I'd also want a short one I guess - 50mm?

Unless your pitch side keep it over 70mm. I shoot pitchside but still always use my 80-200. I should make use of 2 bodies and take me 50mm 1.8 and get some nice detailed shots for when the come up close.
Track days you will definitely need telephoto as obviously you cant get close up to the cars

if you are just starting then i would get to grips with the lense that came in the kit, i also read and was told the standard lense isnt brilliant but tbh i cant really fault it for my level of expertiese. Look a couple of threads down from this at my thread titled "Todays pics" the first two were taken with the standard lense

One of my mates is on the day after, and my uncles in on the 22nd.
All the cool people have birthdays in March
Yeh, I think your right Rob - they look ace and I guess for anything but the finest work you won't notice.
Will still need the longer lens later though.
Another question though......
My current camera has a lens range of 6.3-63mm (10x zoom). The 400d comes with an 18-55 so I'm thinking that even at the shortest zoom, its still going to be a much narrower shot than the 6.3 on my current one? Is that right or doesn't it work like that?

if you want i will take a couple of fixed shots with the standard lense at 18mm and one at 55mm so you can see the power of the zoom?

Decided I'm going for the 400D as per
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B000IKVOE8/ref=pd_sbs_ce?ie=UTF8&qid=1204395729&sr=8-1
Also was going to get an extra long lens at the same time. Can anyone comment on these two?

May aswel go for the 75-300. f4 at around 75 compared to f4.5 on the 90mm.
15mm extra range isnt going to make a difference to the sharpness of the lens i wouldn't think

Oh balls, copy/pasted the wrong link
Meant to be this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-Macro-Canon/dp/B000ALLMI8/ref=pd_sbs_ce_img_7
and the 75-300 canon lens

I would always tend to go for your camera branded stuff rather than Sigma/Tamron, saying that they are by no means bad lenses at all. I've used the Sigma 70-300 before and its was a nice lens i just found the focus a little slow.

you know what, I'm so confused now.
First I decide on the 400d, kit lens and 75-300 lens as an extra.
Then I go into John Lewis just to see and hold the camera and the guy says perhaps consider waiting for the 450D out later this month, or next.
Then I change my mind on lenses, then back to the original again.
Then others suggest going cheaper, which is tempting but I don't want to sacrific quality now only to wish I'd gone for something more expensive later.
WTF do I do

Get the 400d + kit lens then work out from there what lenses you feel you need.
