Basically ive always been told since I can remember that buying a car brand new is pointless, that as soon as you drive it away you lose £1000 upwards (depending on purchase price), and that they can still go as wrong as an older car?

Its just that with these 0% finance deals around for 3 years, it does make it affordable, and lets face it, if you buy new you are going to look after it so might keep it for more than 3 years?

Im not buying anytime soon, but anyone got thoughts on this cos obv everybody has a different view

id like to buy brand new, not a huge fan of second hand tbh as you never know what the previous driver treated it like.

Normally i would always say no, go for something a yr old and go to the dealers just a the new reg is coming out. This way you can snatch a bargain as they need space for new cars but if you can find a decent finance deal then yeah why not.

You'll know it hasnt been thrashed.

Well take this for example, we will be looking for a nice newer car, weve currently got a 1.8si R reg escort, i mean theres little wrong with it and its cost us bugger all in maintenance so far except for a couple of new tyres, but it revs itself silly sometimes so can see it failing on emissions or something in 4 months.

We arent necessarily looking for new, but something like this:

http://www.stoneacre.co.uk/flash-offer1.htm

Would be perfect, and if you ask me, £8000 for a brand new car is incredible, considering I love the shape of these Punto's anyway, and those weekly payments of £30 would be no problem, I put away £40 a week now into savings anyway, so it just seems so affordable, just want someone to talk me out of it

ONLY if you can get it at 0% then yes.

If not, go for some kind of ex-demo type car. Often come with 3 years warranty from a dealership and fully loaded for not a lot of money.

Deano, definetly 0%, im doing the Accountancy and Finance degree so I'm really getting inside knowledge on interest and how it works and how the companies really do rape us poor consumers, and Ive also got Contract Law mixed in there as well so I got a basic idea of what to look for in the paperwork

New just seems restricted and expensive to me, you need full comp insurance, being 21 this would mean new I would have to get something like a 1.2 which I would never keep for 3 years, 1.2 + 3yrs= bored to tears....Say you got a car for £10k-£11k after the 3 years it would be worth £3000-£3500. You damage it then use the fully comp for repairs and your insurance will shoot up, seems like lose lose situation where your just going to loose money, maybe you will gain some credit history
Good side is you get a 3 years warrenty if anything does go wrong but other then that I cannot see the point.
Kia do 7 years warrenty which sounds pretty good value for money.

Old cars are great, cheaper insurance and cheaper to fix.

Well our insurance fully comp this year (20y/o male and 19y/o female) would be £520 FC for a standard policy but we are going on PAYG which will work out around £350 FC for the year, so tbh insurance isnt really an issue, as we would be going for a 1.2/1.4 anyway as that is all we need. As we both arent over interested in going stupid speeds (70mph is the limit anyway) wouldnt need anything bigger than that

Its things like your 3 year warranties (i know not everything is included) first 3 years no MOT's, knowing its not been thrashed to pieces etc are all the pros

I do hate the depreciation though, does bring a tear to the eye lol

as that punto is over 5 years, work out how much it would cost you to take a loan out over that period for £8k. I recon even a 12/18 month old car would still fetch £6k and again if you worked out your monthly payments it would probably work out more expensive I imagine.

It's probably worth noting that you should expect more niggles with a brand new car than you would for a 12 month old one.

0% is a lot of shite.. I work for Vauxhall, there 0% deals are all fine and well but you pay full wack for the car. I can beat a 0% deal on a normal finance scheme purely because of the discount on list price..

Obviously depends on the dealership then - I was given 2k off list price of my VXR, then offered FDA or 0% over 4 years.

Depends on where you park it, how you look after it etc.

Bought 3 cars from new now, well delivery miles. Don't think i will do again next time around as i don't look after the pug the way i should.

I dont consider myself to be wedged enough to be able to buy a new car, I know what brands I like & would rather buy 2nd hand than take on a lesser moddel. Im also not sure I could commit to keeping a car for 3 years.

So yea, 2nd hand for me until I consider myself to be wedged enough to be able to buy a new car easily without having to worry about payments or depreciation!

Theres no harm in buying brand new as long you accept from the outset that it'll lose a chunk as soon as its on the road.

If you can afford/want to buy new why not! Live a little

Ex-demo is quite a good way to get a basically brand new car. Even if it might have had a bit of abuse to start with it'll do it no harm and you get a nice discount.

IMO lease plans are only their to make a company money, and being as their are som many lease companies about, i'd imagine their's a fair bit to be made from it, indicating it's not the cheapest way to get your hands on a new car .

only reasons i bought brand new were becausei got staff discount and a ticket for a car (3 year deal, swap the car every 9-12 months if you wish) and still get back a good amount of money and also because everything always broke in my corsa so i gave up

basically, if i trade my car in in july for the focus st, i'll get about 8k i guess for the fiesta (paid 9700 for it) then can just adjust the finance plan to suit the amount needed to pay. not bad losing under 2k in a year IMO.

I would only buy brand new if I was getting something decent, spending £35k +

For something run of the mill i'd just get one thats done a few miles. My dad sells mainly 6-12 month old vauxhalls, the money they lose from brand new is silly.

ive been driving 9 years and only ever lost money on a couple of cars and its never more than £500 most cars ive kept 6-12 months and made money on

Ive always said it, Id nerver buy a brand new car

My car had a LIST price with all the options of £15,600

16 months and 19 thosand miles later I paid £8450 for it

yes its an orange fiat so the resale was never gonna look promising but I quite happily put up with it not being brand new for the saving I got

same here... I'll never buy brand new. I'd rather go for a 1-2 year old car with a few thousand miles over the smell of a brand new car as I'll be saving ££££
