Getting a camera for my birthday, but dont know much about them tbh. Would this one be a good camera to start with, and would it be any good at taking night pics?
Thanks for any help.

Nice camera but not as nice as the Fuji S6500FD.

I have it, really like it - I think its a steal for the money, but honestly, its a bit grainy at night and the exposure times are really long enough to get a decent shot. In the daylight however, its brilliant IMO. I've already had 2 large posters made up from the photos taken and they look spot on

Cheers, the problem is that i attend a weekly cruise at night, which would be the main time id use it. Would you suggest i purchase a difffernt one?

If you want good night shots buy a Nikon D40 with the 18-55 lens. £250 inc Nikon cash back. Theses shots will not be very grainy at all compared to the Fuji.
However the S6500FD is excellent at night although a tripod should always be used in anything other than daylight.

You've really got a decision to make, either go for the D40 as above with tripod to get really good pics, or go for a cheaper Fuji having saved yourself a lot of money.
If you don't want to go out with a tripod, I think you'd be better off with a Fuji 5700/6500 personally.

If you have the cash then buy a Nikon D60 as it comes with the new 18-55 VR lens which would allow seriously slow shutter speeds hand held. Costs £500 though.

Like it mate. Think I may purchase it actually.
But what about this one? - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fuji-FinePix-S9600-Digital-Camera/dp/B000INUDMY/ref=pd_bbs_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204885097&sr=8-4
Seems like a really good deal, which would be the best camera, especially for night photos?
Thanks very much for your help.

The Fuji 9600 doesn't have image stability which is vital for zoom lenses without using a tripod.
