So I'm bored at uni at the moment and just remembered that in IT at school people used to type a code in the command prompt that allowed you to send messages to other computers on the network.
Anyone know how to do this?

It wont work if the IT guys have disabled the messenger service.
I think SP2 disables it anyway TBH.
We used to do it at school too then the IT techs would do it to us saying "DONT DO THAT"

net send * if you want some proper trouble.
Start - Run - Office - Word if you want to pass your course and not be a dossing waster.

I had a mate who did that at school.
He put it on a loop in a bat file too, so every computer in the school (including the Head Master's) had a message come up 10 times.

Would this work on a home network all connected via cable to a netgear router?

lol, don't do this if you dont know what you're doing. Me and some mates were doing this in one of our college rooms once, little did we know that the messages of "XXXX's MOM IS A WHORE" was going to 3 different university campuses and the local library. EVERY COMPUTER.
As Ian Said
"net send * if you want some proper trouble."
Yep...

Yes, but only if the messenger service was started on the computers
