Best post i have seen about it on 606;

Right! lets put this to bed shall we. WBA are insisting that if Steele goes to Barnsley for the remainder of the season, Barnsley will pay his full wages. Barnsley have agreed to this, contrary to what you may read in the papers or hear on a radio. What they are also saying is that Barnsley MUST commit to signing the player on a permanent basis at the end of the season. Barnsley already have a keeper due back from injury in the summer, Heinz Muller.
Furthermore Steeles wages are reported to be 8k a week currently. Barnsley have said they will pay this for the remainder of any loan period. not half or 40% but all of it. However, if they did agree to sign him at the end of the season , what would they be committing themselves too in respect of his wages once a BFC employee? I doubt if his agent or Steele would sign for any less than half his current wages wich would put him on 4K aweek , more than any other player at the club! Howard is only getting 3.5K!!! The que of players and agents outside the chairmans door would be a mile long!! it would break the wage structure at the club and cause no end of problems and trouble to what is, more or less, a settled dressingroom. To tell the truth I'm sick of hearing about 'tight Barnsley' and 'lack of ambition' . I suggest if people want Steele on Albion's terms they go out and find 5000 more supporters to come every week next year, because far from being a 'free' transfer that's what it would end up costing the club. Alternatively we can get beind the sensible business acumen of our chairman and the canny knack of finding pearls of our manager and hope they can find another keeper who's current club wont hold a gun to our head just to loan him for the rest of the season.

What would you do? bit of a predicament! Do you reckon with the chance to play in the semi's at Wembley they could attract another decent keeper? Wright from Everton,Simenson from Villa, Ben Foster even maybe, that would be an immense but not going to happen loan! The problem is, that Steele who granted played a blinder against Liverpool, doesn't look a patch on Muller mainly when it comes to crosses. Need a keeper desperatly though, more importantly could do with 3 points off the blunts at the weekend.

Ben Foster would be a distinct possibility if fergie decides to put him out on loan for a few months

it would be an awesome loan signing, can't see it happening though with VDS being injured and other one suspended.
Yeah Ste, a team with no keeper playing a team with no idea, should be a fun match.

Richard Wright has just gone to Southampton for a month. Still no news on the keeper front.

"But if Barnsley meet West Brom in the Cup final, Steele will not be eligible."

Oh well, rather play pompey anyway (if we beat cardiff that is!).
