Toying with the idea of a new lens.

300mm F4 prime, or up to 400mm zoom with a range of F4.5-5.6

Tempted by the prime, but worried about the lack of flexibility and the fact I only have one body to use.

They both cost the same, what would you go for - better aperture or zoomability?

Would seem the sensible choice, just hope that if I went for it I don't end up chopping and changing lenses.

Pretty heavy too - 1200g

It will be sharper than the zoom lens. Plus F4 is pretty good. Which exact ones you looking at?
