whats the best method for plastics and the best method for metal or a pre painted surface because i am doing my whole car again and also doing the plastics (arch tops and bumper tops)

An orbital sander, you strippin the whole car to bare metal?

plastics are best done by hand mate!
240 grade, then 400 then 800, then 1200 if u want it really shiny when painted

no was just gunna rough it up enough for primer to stick to and for a smooth surface

whoever painted the passenger side previously did a crap job with it there is runs etc everywhere i cant leave it like that rest of the car has scratches dents dings etc just wanna fix em up and respray it cos its a mess and i wanna spray arch tops and bumper tops metallic grey and colour code the boot handle scuttle panel and door handles

For plasics use something like a 180 grit, then a 320 grit, getting rid of all the little bump effects.
As for dents etc, sand off the paint to bare metal, quite a bit around the dent with a 180 grit, then fill it, sand down again with 180 grit, then 320 grit, then 500 grit, primer, then sand whole panel down with 800 grit, then all the little bits like in corner edges etc can use scotch brite.

if you need to ask these kind of questions i would stongly advise you dont really have a go your self.
Not putting you off it but it wont turn out to great if you dont know what your doing!

i have done it before i do know what i am doing just seeing what other methods there are out there are because i dont want to spend weeks sanding lol
