Will i need to just key the surface and spray or do i need to strip them back to plastic and use plastic primer and then prep and spray?

I have always just sanded already painted plastics with 800grit wet n dry to key teh surface , 3 0r 4 good coats a colour , light wet n dry with 1200 grit wet n dry , then a few coats a lacquer , never done me wrong , but am no spray painter just done a few bumpers , mirrors and spoilers

i think as long as they were plastic primed the first time then just key the surface
