on my ps3 i can connect external hard drive by usb and watch divx movies. can i do it on an xbox360?

Don't know, but you can download tversity and stream stuff from your PC to the PS3, pretty sure the Xbox does as well.

This is relying on you having a wireless router btw

Yeah PS3 will play DivX off local/USB disk, or over the network using a DLNA server (or Windows MediaConnect).

360's dont play divx films

Plays them through Media Connect etc, but Media Center Extender doesn't play them IIRC.
Unless you use Transcode360, obviously.
