Depends how far you want to go mate? Canon G9 is a good compromise between slr and compact. Its quite bulky but gives you all the freedom of a dslr, all apart from the freedom to interchange lenses and use filters. Otherwise 450D I would recommend everytime for an entry level slr

Where?
If your going to get into DSLR photography be prepared to spend and spend and spend and spend
Seriously though a Fuji S6500fd will let you learn the ropes and also gives you the huge zoom range that would cost big money from a DLSR.
