following on from my 'what bhp will i get' thread.

what things have you been told by so called 'mechanics/people in the know' that are so blatently wrong.

mine was:
quote:

just remembered what a lad i knew told me a while ago. he had a 1.0 corsa and he bought a vacum gauge and claimed it added 10bph also told me that the wirring noise his car made was and intercooler and it was under the engine.
all this from someone who did mechanics at the college

His tutor told him that stupid fact, so it must be true

The service receptionist once asked me to order glow plugs for her car. I asked what engine and she said "i think its a diesel?"

I went in to have some tyres fitted a while ago, they really pushed for me to buy X tyre for £55 per corner, but I wanted Y tyre for £50 per corner - the story I got from the chav attendant:

"To be honest mate, you REALLY don't want those tyres, my mate from college spun out and went under a flatbed lorry on the motorway roundabout doing about 65mph because of these tyres"

"What car was he in?"

"Rover 25.... top of the range mind"

*walks out and gets tyres from kwikfit*

I was at PVS, went on the LMF stand.

"Do you have any Irmscher mugs?"

"For what car?"

"No, a mug. As in tea & coffee"

"Oh, a mooog"

i had some swollen nuts (wheel nuts) which i couldn't remove and drove to Kwik Fit to see if they would take them off.
The guy there told me they're not insured to remove wheel nuts

i walked away laughing.

Other than that can't say I've been given a billy-bull-shit story from a mechanic.

EDIT: Oh, wait. Got an exhaust on my missus' car. It was blowing as soon as I started it up, like really loud. They didn't come out and listen to the car, but I insisted on how loud it was and knew it wasn't right. They said it'd seal up over time with carbon build up etc

i handed my irmy part numbers to the VAUXHALL body shop for my front airdam and rear bumper and they quoted me the price

when the parts turned up at the body shop (sent to them for ease) they were suprised to see electrical bits in the box (fog lights) and phone me up "yes hello Mr Davies, we have opened the box and found all this "electrical stuff"

"right ok......"

"well looks like the front bumper has fogs to be fitted"

[in a flat, "but of course" tone] "yes..."

"well its going to cost you more"

"HOW!"

"well we didnt antiscipate doing electrics"

"and thats my problem? i gave you the part numbers from the Vaux website, to which you went away and priced up the fitting, based on what i can only assume to be timings to fit in your book for this part number.....if you have messed up i dont see why i need to pay...."

"well....you see it is going to take longer"

"can i speak to your manager please"

to which he apologised for the mishap and we agreed i would pay an extra hours labour but no more....fecking tools!

iv heard a few funny tails from customers:

one guy has a 1.6 cvh escort cabby, which was "drilled" out to a 2ltr

someone else had a japanese imported lhd skyline r32

someone else had a clio 1.8 16v which did 165mph with the valve off, i asked him what valve, he told me the fuel valve, when that was on it would do 200mph, but he wanted to spend abit of money on getting more top end from it.........

all good fun

They would have put the part numbers in their invoicing system that would just say "bumper". They prob didn't think about fog lights too

Fonz - surely the fogs would have different part numbers? Or did you include them?

the fogs were part of the "front airdam kit" i quoted the part number as on the website, and passed that to the body shop. the box with that part number arrived at the body shop......i couldnt see the issue myself
