As above really? My mk4 Astra is a 4stud but there are plenty going around as 5 stud ones. Any particular reason a manufacturer uses 4 stud on one car but then 5 on another?

five is stronger, hence it been 5 on the bigger engined ones etc

Ive never seen a 4 stud shear its studs off......

no im sure it wouldnt in henral but five is always going to be stronger so you might as well

Cheaper and stronger.

If you have larger wheels then 4 studs very close to the centre of the wheel are going to exert more stress on the wheel than 5, 6, 8 or whatever futher out from the centre of the wheel.

Also, if you are building 500,000 odd cars a year, and the wheel studs cost 50p each then on a 5 stud car you'd spend £5,000,000 on studs, where as on a 4 stud you'd save a million, which is probably why some early Saxos and AX's came with 3 stud wheels...

Bigger brakes on the 5 stud Astra's. 280mm Discs on the front and 256mm on the rear.

It is strange though.

Especially when you consider the Corsa C's.

Fair enough the 12v, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 had 4 stud and drum brakes at the rear.

Then the 17CDTi had 5 stud, and you think "yeah, that works being an SRi and quicker than other Corsa C's" but then the 1.8 SRi only has 4 stud with drum rears iirc?!

My Punto with its 17 inch 225 tyres and 250 ft lbs has 4 stud, but my mates 1.2 55brake Polo with steelies has 5 stud

well 5 stud should theoretically reduce wheel wobble, but ford cosworths only have 4 and they manage up to 500bhp!

Im more or less sure SRI 1.8's are disks all round iirc
