I'm looking at selling my car and having a run of the mill a3 tdi or golf tdi or similar for work (15k miles a year) and then getting something a bit flasher and fun for the weekend. Would get very light use possibly only 2 or 3k miles a year - I'm willing to spned up to £15,000 on it.

Ideally I'd like something that won't depreciate rapidly or even better something that would appreciate in value. Really haven't looked into classic cars before but was looking for some input on what cars may hold their value or appreciate in value? Must also be rare and look special. Any input / ideas would be great.

An old Ford, something like an Escort RS2000/Mexico/RS1800/RS1600/Twin Cam, Lotus Cortina, would be my choice for an investment.

They've been steadily going up in value for years with no sign of stopping.

Yes obviously it's not guarenteed that they'll go up in value - I'm not buying one as a investment but would be nice to find something I liked that would hold it's value well. Will have a look at the old fords now cheers robin.

For any car to be a investment it really needs to be bought with very low miles. THen locked away in a carcoon for 10 years plus.

Depends what you mean by investment.

I didn't lose any money on my mk1 Golf, it was a better investment than a more modern car.

A nice clean Escort Cosworth with minimal mods in a good colour should return a good resale, would be fun for the weekends too!!

while they may go down in value, they dont free fall like a new vaux off the forecourt

I've had the 911 for 3 years now i think. It comes out in the summer, usualy does about 1000miles a year, sometimes less. Its got under 80,000miles on the clock and is pretty much standard. Its starting to need a freshen up. I keep it in a climate controlled bag over the minter months.

All in all its not a bad car for being 27years old. Its needing some expensive work soon though :S New heat exchangers.

I dont think i'll have lost any money on what I paid, but i got it all a pretty cheap 'family' price. Prob worth about 10k now. Was 18k new, have the original sale docs etc.

my current want are a ferrari 512BBi but they have shot up from 40k to 70 k in a few years I want a ferrari though.

How about a lambo Jalpa? They have interested me before... nice V8

Keep pondering turning my 911 into an RS rep too, but unsure about it. Maybe see if there is need for much work on it... If it needs a bit do it, if not, dont.

Like robin said, and going back to fords, there are loads and loads of specalists still, and parts, despite possible cosworth tax, are still cheap

which i dont think can be said for the lambo

corrado vr6 storm
mk1 lotus elise
old BMW, like a CSL, or a 2002, from the 70's (might be out of price range)

tbh no car is really an investment, you have to find something that for some reason will be sought after in years to come. Plenty of enthusiasts for mk1 escorts as said already
