Looking into buying one of these mid '09...

Was just wondering if anyone on here has one or has owned one at some point? Just generally wanting to know what they are like to live with, any common problems, what to look out for when buying etc...

Insurance/tax/petrol/servicing stories very welcome!

Insurance will be a killer. Over 270bhp and very quick! You'll probably get a Type R for cheaper, and they are actually a better car

I know, wanted some kind of Impreza since i was about 13...

Insurance quotes would suggest about £2k, would be rather expensive but worth i reckon

The STi TypeR is a better spec'd car.... The P1 is based on the STi V TypeR and 'softened' for UK market.

Imsurance may be more expensive on the TypeR, but the P1 is still demaning a premium over the JDM car for some reason.

Beware of cheap imports, with no history etc. Try and get one thats been in the UK for a while, with history.

They are great cars... very very capable on B roads, but a little tiresome on motorways... 5000+rpm at cruising speeds for instance!

But 4.3sec to 60 should make up for that.

You do need to budget a lot of maintaining them properly though. If used as intended they will be heavy on clutches/brakes etc. Change the oil about every 3000miles to with 10w60 fully synth.
If it has a boost increase/or decat MAKE SURE ITS MAPPED/FUELED CORRECTLY. They have a rep of having soft engines.... They dont, its just muppets that buy them and turn up the BOOOST without spending on supporting mods.

here is our old TypeR (ps its a feckin 2 door, not 3)

spec etc - http://www.trackscotland.co.uk/projects/impreza.htm

we sold it for about 9.5k a year and a bit ago. It was a 98 R

Not the most reliable of cars mate, but quick cars seldom are i guess, they arent too bad to work on.
Rape you on fuel (optimax only).
To get the most out of em and eliminate the dreaded detonation they must be remapped, consult the legend that is Bob bout that, the car is mapped to Jap spec fuel and inlet temps etc, it comes over here and u get untold amounts of detonation and eventually melt a nice hole through your piston.
No.3 and No.4 pistons share an oil gallery on the crank for the shells and at high rpm this isnt always delivering sufficient oil and can dry it out also causing certain metal components to melt!
Hence the term chocolate engines/pistons!

I did notice that alot of the adverts for them suggest they have been rebuilt, sometimes at very low mileage...

So ideally you would look for one that has been remapped? Are there any good owners club website's for P1's or just Impreza's in general?

Had one for 2 years and 15k miles and never had a single problem with mine.

Look after them and they will treat you well, use a good fully syn oil (15W50 if its just for road use) change it regularly by someone that knows what they are doing (ie, dry cranking) and install some warning devices - Knocklink, oil temp gauge (plumbed over piston 3), boost gauge and oil pressure gauge.

Yeah the map doesnt suit UK fuel too well but stick with 99 RON shell and some octane booster and it will be fine!

Basically a fuels RON rating is its resistance to detonation, the higher the rating the higher it resists. The Subaru engine has a few design flaws:
1) Top mount intercooler isnt the best at keeping things cool
2) Piston 3 is last to be fed with fuel
3) Piston 3 is sat next to the red hot turbo
4) MAF sensors
When the inbore temps get high (due to the items above) the fuel actually ignites before the spark - The fuel should ignite when a piston is at TDC ready to be pushed back down. When the fuel is ignited early, the piston is on its way back up so its like hitting it with a hammer. The P1's map comes a bit too close to stoich a few times in its curve (14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel) which with high inlet temps is obviously a bit lean! This detonation attacks the pistons but they also reckon the shockwaves from the detonation is what damages the big end shells. Another thing that also causes DET is a weak MAF sensor - Basically the ECU learns to compensate for a failing MAF so you wont even notice that is going. It does "compensate" but cant do the whole job properly. Test it regularly - Either by unplugging the MAF while the car is idling to see if it cuts out (if it does then the MAF is ok) or reset the ECU (if the car runs like a bag of shit afterwards then its knackered!)

You can put a knocklink on the car which is basically a microphone that picks up a certain frequency - 6400Herts if I remember rightly. This frequency is resonation in the block after det has occured which should give you some early warnings that there is a problem!

Hope that helps

Stu
