When the earth runs out of oil reserves, what do you think will take it's place for energy?
I don't just mean running cars either.

In my humblest we'll never run out of oil.Tthey're still finding oil fields all the time. Look at the size of Russia alone - barely tapped.
Abu Dhabi has 98 billion barrels left and look at the size of the country in comparison to Saudi. Miniscule.

Of course it will run out, its just a matter of when not if.
IMO we havent discovered (or atleast not fully discovered) the next major form of energy yet.

Tough one, I take in what your saying, but it takes god knows how long to appear. So, we will be using faster than it's making, so one day....were fucked.

I agree, were still in limbo.
But, oil is used for making all sorts. Not just petrol....plastics, solvents, pesticides and stuff.

wind and wave will produce all of the electric we require; they're planning on fitting 1 windmill for every 1/2 miles of coastline of the UK
We'll become an energy rich nation and could sell surpluss power back onto the global network

It'll run out. But not in my lifetime. So long as I dont have kids.... Bothered
Edit: That doesn't mean I dont care or I dont try to preserve what we have, but it wont bother me and I wont spend my life campaigning against the use of it.

Oil will last far longer than the scaremongers will have you believe. There is more oil in known reserves in the North Sea than has been extracted from it. With new technology and more extensive seismic surveys that will stay that way for quite some time and this is from fields that we're told would be empty years ago.

By the time it runs out, we'll all be dead by the 3rd world war nuclear strikes.

Hydrogen,

Nuclear is the next logical step, we've already got the technology to pull it off, and many places already do.
Once people stop being scared of it, we can use that for global electricity supplies and run everything else off of that.

Good point.

I agree with that, I don't know why we haven't aimed for 100% electricity by nuclear power.
One question, what do you all think transport will end up using? Not very convenient to put a reactor in your car is it

Nuclear provides less energy globally than renewable sources just now and is also wrong imo. Give man the opportunity to fuck something up and that's exactly what we do.

Synthetic and bio fuels for an interim period until the power of hydrogen can be tapped.

No, however battery technology is advancing pretty quickly, get one which will provide a range of 500miles + on a charge, then start implementing electricity "pumps" at major petrol stations - nothing too far fetched, even if it was to be implemented in a couple of years' time - we just need the nuclear power in the first place.

You'll still be able to get electronic dump valves off of ebay, no worries

think about it like this.....
Where did oil come from?
Dead organic life/plants etc decomposing.... things are still happening...
There are still loads of oil fields in the worls, but the North Sea is getting quite old.... but with new technology the life of fields are getting expanded greatly.
I do some work on a 30year old norweigian field. With the work we have done they have now forecast another 25years from it.
You have all the deepsea oppertunities too, most of which are still too deep to get to.

Indeed, Oil is still getting 'made' all the time, however we're using it far, far quicker than it's getting produced.
I guess cost comes into it aswell, these deepsea opportunites are probably inaccessible or not cost efficient with current drilling technology, otherwise they would be tapped already!
Eventually we WILL run out, but like others have said - I expect us to have moved onto alternate sources of power by that time anyway, we're sure to develop something more efficient or kill ourselves well before oil dries up.
