I know it the wrong section but my mate is after some ideas of what the issue could be
- 20 minute drive and the thermostat light came on (this is the second time)
- no hot air comes through the fans anymore
- has checked fluids and all seem fine
Any ideas? I've told him to flush the system and service the car and see, but he cant do this til Sunday
Cheers

He's also just added - has noticed the fan is always on when he gets home from work (30 minutes traffic)

sounds very much like this, tell him to open up his bleed valve on the radiator and see if loads of air comes out, also take the lid off the top of the coolant bottle and run the car, see if loads of bubbles come up

I had air lock in my corsa last week. I just started the engine from cold with the coolant cap off and left it for 10minutes untill it warmed up slightly. Put the cap back on, turned then engine off, went for a drive and its fine now

No circulation in the system. Pump or airlock. I'd say the pump.

UPDATE
He drove home last night - 30 minutes stop/start traffic followed by 5 minutes dual carriage way
Had no issues and was getting hot air coming from the fan
Let engine cool down then started and sat for 2-3 minutes
Fan started after 2 minutes then the red temperature light instantly came on. Tried hot air and nothing.
Drove to work this AM - got hot air after a minute or so and no red light
Could it be a system block? I think maybe the thermo is playing up.
He's just back from Halfords (armed with trade card) and got
- Radiator "lubricator" thing that you flush the system with (halfords monkey recommended it)
- Oil
- Oil filter
- 2 ltrs anti freeze (to do 50/50 mix)
Opted to give him a hand tonight. Any suggestions to try / test are more than welcome

Dude, the fans seize up on these and operate funnyily when they start! Also very very common for headgasket failures and water pumps failing, i work in Fiat and see alot of these all the time. Head off and get skimmed and tested, new headset, belt, tensioner and water pump and obvioulsy coolant. Also do oil and filter change.
