When I turn the laptop on everything is fine untillI select the user I want to log in. The welcome message comes up but it then hangs on that and won't go any further.
I have tried safe mode but that did the same. I have also tried starting with last known good configuration but that didn't help either. Any ideas or will I need to find my vista disk out for a reset?

On XP when you get to the Account screen you can press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice quickly and it brings up a box, where you can type your administrator account name (mine is just Administrator) and you can acces the admin one from there. Try that. If it doesnt work then fair enough, but have you left it to lad for a little while? It might be installing Windows Updates or other program updates or removing spyware and so is just busy?

Yeh I left it for around an hour last night and it didnt do anything.
Also trid taking the battery out for 10 mins.
Ended up turning it off to see if its over heating so will have a look at it later. Thinking I may need to do a repair/format from the vista disk tho.

Just reformatted Vista from scratch on my girlfriends laptop as the on-going problems just wouldnt go away.
From my experiences with that Operating System, Vista is nothing but a pile of utter shite.
I'd downgrade to XP if I were you.

What experiences would lead you to that?
My experiences of it is that it's really good.

To be fair I havn't had a problem with it and we've had the laptop around 18months at a guess? It's had some right hammer aswell and this is the first problem we've had.
Doesnt matter too much that I have to format it as theres nothing of any importance on it. Just cant be arsed

System recovery seems like the best option mate. I try to do a system recovery myself every 6 or so months just to keep the OS fairly stable and virus free

Vista has worse support for "legacy" applications than XP does.
Windows For Workgroups 3.11 FTW!

I think Vista is shit because some mouthy git said so on his blog.
Though, getting back to the point, I'd suggest you get the Vista DVD in and try and repair the system. There are a variety of different fixes you can apply, and it usually sorts itself out.
