Lately been thinking of getting my own place, and was wandering what the rough cost was per month. Would be looking for a small apartment/flat.
Off the top of my head there is


  1. Rent
  2. Gas/Electric
  3. Water
  4. Council tax
  5. Insurance


    Apart from food is there anything else id need to take into account.
    Also if people could give me a rough idea on prices, that would be great

1. Flat - £300
2. Gas - £100 a quarter
3. Electric - £140 a quarter (tumble dryer and serveral servers running)
4. Water - what ever the standard charge is as the meter is broken. Told United Utilities several times and so it's not there problem
Council tax - £106 a month
5. Insurance - not go any (still need to sort this but not to much an issue as my parents live next door and will hear the alarm kick off)
6. Food including cleaning products - £200ish a month

The list goes on..

Don't bother renting, dead money and paying for someone elses investment.

Shared ownership if you can as you still end up gaining capital.

My house including essential bills costs me £660 per month.

Sky, Broadband etc is on top of that.

Probably a few more bits and bobs but thats the bulk

Live with my girlfriend, im a student at uni

Rent - £450

Will be looking to buy asap, as has been said before, rent is dead money, only renting till im earning and didnt want to live in some shit hole of a student area

Thats what ive been thinking, it is kind of dead money, but its probably the cheapest way at the moment, and possably easiest.

Also consider whether whilst renting, you can afford to save up for your deposit for your own 'house'.

As I know when I start working, I'll either be paying rent, or saving for a mortgage, I wouldn't be able to pay for both.

Rent with the parents doesn't count

Rent isn't always dead money. For instance if you can manage to rent and save, you'll be saving a fortune when you come to buy in the current climate

Rent is also the only choice for people who need the flexibility of not being tied into owning a house with a mortgage in a dead market, like me

For a 2 bed flat in the centre of Birmingham...

  1. Rent = £775
  2. Electric = ~£20
  3. Gas = don't have it
  4. Water = ~£20
  5. Council tax = £free
  6. BT = £11
  7. Sky+Internet = £35
  8. Insurance = don't have it

i will say its very hard to put cost of living up because everybody lives by there means, and there alot of things people miss out when writing a list of bills.... mine are

mortgage 672
loan 100
water 44
electric 80
tv 11
house ins 15
phone/interweb 26
life cover x2 16
car insurance 18 for corsa and 35 for astra
council tax 104
mortgage payment protection 25
mobile 15
food 200
petrol 50-80

think thats everything.... thats base on my take home pay of 1600 without overtime/bonus, and my mrs 1250 basic take home
