Will it auto focus? Yes. The tamron 70-300 will give you f/5.6 at 300mm as apposed to 6.3 with that one. Around the same price too.

No that Sigma will not AF. With Sigma only their HSM lenses will AF on the D40.
As for Tamron only their IF lenses will AF on the D40.
and Nikon only AF-S will AF on the D40.

Not sure if it helps but my flickr is mainly track pics and ones from london zoo. Ive got a 70-300mm tamron, they 300mm was good at the zoo. 200mm will be fine on most UK circuits, I needed the extra 100mm at le mans though! I like the fact that with the smallest aperture available to me I can, most of the time I can get the foreground obstacles (eg chain link fences) to disapear completely.

so, if buying one you'd choose the 300 over 200 max zoom then?

Depends really. My Tamron is f/5.6 at 300mm, though im after a 200mm f/2.8 Sigma. When I took photos on a rally the lighting wasnt great in the forest, at f/5.6 I was having to compensate with a higher ISO and the photos were slightly grainy.

Considering its a D40, 6 megapixels is going to limit the amount of cropping you can get away with. Dude check out the 70-300mm tamron, maybe theres an IF lens.

I have my hopes up here

there is one for £129.99 that says EXCLUDING D40/D40x

then there is another for £149.99 thats says INCLUDING D40/D40x

Both use the same picture in the listing and have the same write up, just the prices are difrferent, suggesting that the dearer (compatible one) is more expensive cause it has a motor in it I hope

Pressuming from what corSRI_bt said, only some lenses auto focuses are compatible with your camera, i mean even the first one you posted at the top of the page has a motor, just wont auto focus on your D40. From that I can only conclude that the Nikon auto focus including d40 will work on your camera since it says including d40.

Il see what I can find out at work tomorrow with respect to what focuses and what doesnt, I cant see why some work and some dont. I dont want people to get the impression I think I know everything because I try and help, ive so much still to learn. I have the means to experiment though.

Random, can't believe all these lenses don't autofocus!

Back to focal length, I've found that 300mm is really good and some circuits but can sometimes be too much. For instance even at Silverstone if you pick the right spot you don't need 300mm. Very nice to have though

I'd sooner have 200mm that autofocuses than 300mm that doesn't though.

If cropped in 50% and still got a excellent quality 12x8 from it.

The D40, D40x and D60 do not have internal focusing motors. They rely on the lenses they use to have them.

So all Nikon that are AF-S, all Sigma that are HSM and all Tamron that are IF will autofocus on the D40.

Matt the Nikon 55-200VR is a great lens and will AF on the D40.

http://www.jessops.com/Store/s73537/0/Lenses/Sigma/70-300mm-f-and-4-56-DG-Macro-(Nikon-AF-Including-D40-and-D40x)-/details.aspx?&IsSearch=y&pageindex=2&CatId=143&ManIds=1307,1319,1462,1507,1518,1538,&SortBy=SkuOfferingPriceASC&IsInStockOnly=False&comp=n

The above lens will also work, just make sure it's HSM.

Id go that Sigma above. As people say 300mm can be too much on uk circuits, but at le mans it wasnt enough at points because the crowd is so far from the circuit, which will also apply to the bigger tracks. Went to work in Wimbledon today so didnt anytime to even remember your thread.

best thing i can suggest, is go your local jessop's and try the lens and see it does auto focus?

edit, ignore that, i juts noticed it was for home deliver only, not avaliable for pick up
