does it matter where i buy it from? (ie do i have to host with them etc)
not really clued up on it all tbh.
what do i need to look for (if anything) as i will want it for a website and email (is this through hosting or domain?)
and wheres the best place to buy it from etc etc.

Can buy from anyone and host anywhere. If your not 100% sure what you're doing I'd recommend someone who can host and supply domain though.

Oh, and I bought my domains from http://www.easily.co.uk - was a buy one get one free offer I think

i usually buy thought 123reg..
if you having webspace too, buy that from a diff company, if something goes pear shaped with the hosting, you still got your domain

Now with me, I would say the opposite. If you're with two hosts you've twice the chance of it going down.

1&1 are cowboys. I let a domain expire, but they don't speak enough English there to understand that and tried taking me to court over the fee of about £5.
