I was after a 50mm lens, I was told this is a brilliant bit of kit & quite well priced for what it is
Only problem is I can't get it to take pictures unless I'm on auto mode I gt a flashing "F--" where it normally displays the aperture
100% sure it's something I'm doing wrong

you might have to lock it at minimum apature like I do with my Nikon one

You should all just get a canon, put the lens on, autofocuses and works, no messing about.

I've changed a setting, letting me do it now. The "Use aperture ring" setting was off
I'm wondering if it should display what aperture is selected on the camera screen though?

Yeah, you'll need to lock it. Should be a little tab on the side of the lens.
