hello! im thinking of buying a Mk4 golf v5 170, and was wondering what people think of them, i know theres a few people on here that know a bit about VWs, so i would appreciate any help you could give me, thanks

I know someone that had a 20v (which I think is the same as the V5) Passat 2.0.

It went really well, nice and smooth.

No it's not.

I know someone with a v5 and it's a good car, pick them up for a decent price now too.

I know someone with a v5 and it's a good car, pick them up for a decent price now too.

20v is the same unit as the 1.8 turbo 5v per cylinder. The v5 probably is 20v but if it was called that on a passat I think it's referring to the 1.8 unit.

A V5 is a crappy 5 cylinder engine that's not really even in a V configuration. There are far better engines available for the Golf than this.

what ed said. I seem to remember it being a bit thirsty and a tendancy to get over 100k and go bang instantly.

It was replaced wasnt it? Early on in model range? Usualy a very good indicator they werent very good

1.8T Is an exellent engine

Thank you for this! the v5 im looking at is 4k, R32 is 10-12k! not in the same league is it really?

btw, v5 is 20v

not fast either, and use so much petrol

yeah dont get me wrong, they are lovely looking cars, and sound gorgeous, i havent driven one, but i just wanted peoples opinions on the V5,

ah, replacing whole engines! why? - im not arguing here, but what car said they were returning 27-30 on their road test, and the V5 owners website said they can vary from 18-31 MPG, depending on how they are driven obviously.

why are the engines always replaced, and what sort of mileage were they doing?

both of out were around 60k, mattb garage have seen alot more issues iirc

im just not a fan of the v5 or the v6, 1.t would be a better all round car imo

It is a V formation, its just the angle is so tight that its barely a V, just like the V6.

Good car and aimed more at the older market. More refined inside with better spec such as climate control, differant coloured dash wood and seats compared to the alternative 1.8T which was aimed at a slightly younger market.

The extra 20ps was gained by a slightly differant inlet.
