Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo believes he is a genuine favourite to win the Ballon d’Or and the Fifa World Player this year.

The Portugal international is nearing full fitness after an ankle operation, and has not lost confidence despite his first extended spell on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old received the Golden Boot award in Portugal, and expects further individual honours to come his way.

Lionel Messi and Iker Casillas are part of the shortlist of players expected to compete for the trophy, but Ronaldo believes he deserves to win it.

“The best candidate for the Ballon d’Or and Fifa World Player prizes is Cristiano Ronaldo,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“To be honest, I think I’ve been the best and the most consistent player. And I want to enter the book of the best players in history.

“I’ve managed to change football a bit. Natural strikers are used to winning the Golden Boot, but I’m a winger.

“I don’t think other players have been more consistent than me. I scored 42 goals during the entire season, 31 in The Premier League, won the Champions League and was best attacker and best goal scorer.

“I understand I’m not the one who decides but I’m confident.”

He is arrogant but he keeps producing the goods! If he wasn't a United player I'd probably start to dislike his personality, but you can't deny he goes out there and does it!

Factually I dont have a problem with what he is saying - its the fact he is the one saying it about himself

Least he's modest

He's probably right tbh, he's been more consistent and less injury prone than Messi....his only rival last season really.

His self-confidence and self-belief is all part of what makes him the best player in the world ATM. He wouldn't be half the player if he didn't think he was any good or have the belief he could go and do the things he does. You wouldn't bat an eye-lid if it were Gerrard or Torres

Their is self confidence and self belief and then their is being an arrogant prick. Gerrard is the same level as Ronaldo (as in he brings just as much to the team he plays for as Ronaldo does) and Torres wasnt far off it last season - yet neither of them have ever been that arrogant.

diego maradona was the same, he always talked about himself in the third person and said how good maradona was, must be "best player in the world" syndrome. dont worry cant see any liverpool players catching it for a while

“The best candidate for the Ballon d’Or and Fifa World Player prizes is Cristiano Ronaldo,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“To be honest, I think I’ve been the best and the most consistent player"

Thats not arrogance though, its the truth

Yes but everything else he has said is pure arrogance.

Its one thing being the best at what you do, which is what he currently is, its another refering to yourself int he third person and saying you should be winning the Ballon d'Or!!

I think what Cosmofilopiantube is trying to say is you didn't hear Zidane come away with such bold statements or Pele or Maradona or Cruyff or Platini or Eusebio when they were all trailblazing the beautiful game.

The new football manager should contain new stats

C Ronaldo;

Dribbling 20
Finishing 20
Posing 20
Modesty 1/2

Exactly McHammerite.

Ive no problem with what he is saying as he is the best footballer out there, I have a problem with the fact he is saying it about himself - which is pure arrogance.
