use an IP camera and record to a PC, motion detection is built into the software, and can get CCTV cameras upto 3Mp.

Maplins have loads of cameras. We have a few in our pub and we record to a hard drive. They sell all the software too.
We paid 30quidish for the cams but they are indoor dome ones. You can get nightvision ones with motion dectection so might be worth a look

as nismo said, the motion detection is built into the software. and also as nismo said an IP camera would probably be easiest as i assume you already have a computer? so you don't need to buy a recording unit or anything like that
