Ive got a pdf file open in Adobe reader but I need to get into it and edit the wording/pictures etc. Is there any way this can be done with the file I've got?

You need Acrobat Professional (which you have to buy...or aquire) not just the reader.
However, even if you get this software, the file will probably be locked to prevent you from editing it (Could be wrong though)

Generally speaking, the new Adobe Reader allows you to copy and paste the txt & images quite well - could try putting it into word or something.

Download this program:

I am using the evaluation version, have been for several months now LOL, it still works though!
I use it to copy text and paste into Word or whatever, so it works well for me.
