I have the kit lens which I use most, have a 50mm lens which is ok and I have a Sigma 70 - 300mm
technically the D40 isnt the best you can get for the price, I sort of inherited mine, my dad bough it and didnt use it so I pinched it
its only 6ish mega pixels, that doesnt mean all that much but other simillar price cams offer more,
the biggest problem though is the lack of an internal focus motor, baisicly in most cams the motor that opwers the auto focus is in the body of the camera meaning the lens doesnt have to have a motor, The D40 / D60 doesnt have a motor which means you have to find lenses that DO have a motor in them, which consequently anre harder to find and more expensive
I like the D40 though, Im used to it now and the camera is still far more advanced than me, its a good camera for the money, just have a look at the alternatives first

450D is quite a bit more expensive is it not, would be 1000D at that price.
450D would be an excellent choice though.

Is that the kit?
1000D would be a better option for not much more, or even the sony( A200 possibly)

Yeah thats the 2 im really looking at.
D40 is £249.00
Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera - Black (18-55mm Lens Kit)
A200 is £242.67
Sony DSLR-A200K Digital SLR Camera + Zoom Lens Kit (18-70mm F3.5-5.6)
So would you take the Sony over the D40?

I'd get the A200 over the d40, not even worth thinking about imo.

You should be able to pick up a used Canon 400D for £250 - easy.
If you can stretch your budget a little bit go for this - http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/index.php?id=23&product_uid=1192 - used but mint apparently

Get the D60, It just beat the competition (Cannon and Sony) in a test

1 mag is not official though is it?
Nismo, My advice would be to go into a camera shop and have a good play about with some camera's in your price range, That way you have a "look and feel" of whats right for you.
Menu's on all of the camera's are different and some are understanably harder then others, You also have to look in to the factors of what lens you may need.
I beleive some lens dont autofocus with the D40 also, the "nifty Fifty" lens (50mm Prime - which is essentail in most peoples bags) WONT Auto focus which is shit IMO where as the Canon 400D (which i use) does.
One word of warning, You may have a buget now, but you bank balance will never be the same again, lens cost a lot of money, as does memory and the rest of the little things you WILL want.
Remember your first moddified car cost X amount of money, then the goodies packed on to it probally cost a lot lot more...

the 50mm not AF would be enough to put me off the Nikon if I was buying again

I've got the Sony A200, great value for money.
Can get it now with £30 cashback from Sony making it just over £200, which is an absolute bargain for what you get.
Same sensor as the D60 IIRC

The A200 was only £219 (£249 on the day, then £30 cashback) in Jacobs when i went in on Saturday
I just bought a D60, was a fair bit more though. According to http://www.kenrockwell.com i would of been better off getting a D40 and a second lens

Sony took over part from Minolta, so there is still the history of great cameras + lenses.
Althought here isn't a huge range of sony SLR products, they are developing a stronger place in the market.

If you want loads of lenses and a decent camera go canon then and you don't have to worry about autofocus, and the lenses will still fit when you upgrade.
