er you only use hdmi on a tv that accepts the hdmi signal.
if your asking what the purpose of hdmi is, basically its a high bandwidth digital connection cabpable of sending large resoloution images and uncompressed sound, which is not possible using lower connections e.g composite.
if your talking about using it to connect a pc to your tv, well a dvi and d-sub connection can also send the same res signal so not to much to gain, as currently no sound cards or motherboards support the true-hd audio signals.
that said if your running hdmi into a receiver it makes a simple setup.

ow, well as long as your tv has a hdmi conection then yes use it, the ps3 will be set to the best res it can.
a non hd tv will 99% of the time not have a hdmi connection
hdmi = high definition multimedia interface
not much point having one if the tv is not hd to begin with lol.
