Im totally clueless when it comes to mobile phones, but since mine is nearly 5 years old its time for a change.

Been looking at the newest iPhone but have a few questions, Can it be connected to my laptop so I can get mobile broadband at work? Currently using a 3 mobile broadband USB thing so would be a bonus if I could do away with this.

What are peoples opinions on this phone? looks like its gonna cost about £100 and £35 a month on an 18 month contract

Another option is to purchase the phone from ebay and then go onto the O2 simplicity tarrif - works out cheaper in the long run if you can get the phone fairly cheaper (average price on ebay is around £300 for the 3G iPhone).

As for using it as a modem, it's against O2's T&C's, but if you jailbreak the iphone (allowing you to use 3rd part applications) then there are plenty of apps out that will allow you to do this (modem.app is one, tinyproxy is another which allows you computer to connect via wifi to the iphone and then data is transfered over the networks 3G connection).

Or do what i did, purchased iPhone on ebay for £300, stuck an 02 3g PAYG sim card in it, called up O2, they activated the 12 months unlimited internet and i top up £10 a month and get 500 free txts and use the £10 on calls but most of the time i have £7-8 left at the end of each month.

as Dom has said its against the o2 T&Cs but you can get apps (once jailbroken) that you can tether the iphone to laptop and use as a modem. however, i know of people who have done this in the states (on AT&T) and been told to stop by the network provider

havent heard of anyone trying it on o2 yet so dont know how theyd react to it
