As you may have read from a previous thread I've recently purchased a G4 PowerMac 400 with a suspected dead PSU. Before I spend about £100  buying a replacement, is there any way I can test the PSU to confirm it is actually that (without blowing myself up in the process)?
I've read on the Apple website something about resetting PRAM but I need to get an Apple keyboard before I can try that test, as the box I got didn't come with any input devices (hopefully sorting that out this week when I get a chance).

Can't remember if they use a standard ATX connector on the G4 PSU, if they do then you can purchase a tester.
Otherwise, find someone with a G4 and then swap the PSU out with yours.

It's a 22 pin connector. I've read stuff on some websites about modifying a ATX to fit in the G4 case but I'm scared of killing myself LOL...

We just rip them out and throw in another one at work.

That's a PC, which is slightly different to a mac.

Although, it's only two connections on a ATX psu that need to be swapped to make it G4 compliant - although apparently there are a few problems with using a standard ATX psu, like firewire powered-bus problems etc.
You spoken to your local apple repair centre? they might be able to help you out.......

well on normal PSUs i believe you short the green and a ground to power it on. but i may be wrong

This is true. Stick a paperclip or similar between the green wire and any black one and it will turn on. Then with a multimeter you can test the 12V etc.

Well I can confirm the PSU is definately dead. I opened it up and had a look inside, a couple of transistors have melted...
I just won an eBay auction for a replacement PSU, at only $26.00 USD (about £17.00) which is amazing as someone on eBay from the UK was selling a similar PSU for £120.00!
Is it worth sticking the dead PSU on eBay? Because I'm sure a nerd/electronics geek that knows how to repair such things could fix it for a few pence and make a lot of money selling it working on eBay - Mac PSUs aren't exactly cheap secondhand, and as rare as rocking horse shit brand new.
