But whats the point? Its constantly in the news that downloaders are being punished for everything, so really, what do you need this sort of speed for? Especially considering it mentions there that upload will be very very much slower, which means online gaming for example will still not be perfect

So? Still has something to do with the exchanges right?
I wouldn't know this since I don't have cable BB.

Cable uses their own network and exchanges. Nothing to do with BT

This has been ready for a while. It was being tested by selected XL BB customers' who said that it is brilliant!

No point going too fast - the site you're pulling from needs to provide it. CS for example currently could but if the bandwidth got too much we would have to move on to a capped bandwidth option with unmetered transfer. Larger sites with big files already do this - you can't pull a video off Youtube at 50 mbps for example, you get it just faster than it needs to play and no more. It's a waste of their connectivity to allow it to leave any quicker.

Yup, so is Rapidshare, Newsgroups and any other download P2P method - it's downloading copyright content that's illegal (more sharing copyright material to be honest).......

And this has been reading for well over a year, starting testing it in Jan from what i remember.
Has it's pros and cons and for the time being it isn't being restricted......cableforum.co.uk has more info on this.....

You can pay for most things you're capable of using torrents to obtain can you not?

Nobody would download enough to warrant that connection but they could in theory.

it's not really about downloading amount as you can download 120GB on a 512k or 120GB on a 50mbps connection, it's about how quick it downloads. Plus there's plenty of other reasons to have a 50mbps connection.

Problem is the Virgin (NTL/Telewest) network is understrain offering the current BB services, even if this new 50mbps uses DOCSIS 3 (current network is DOCSIS 2.x) i still can't see them being able to offer a reliable service. And they will limit it like the current bb connections, just what the limits will be.

Have the ever upgraded the network since it was 512k or just kept telling people they now have it 10x faster?

this package actually will relieve some stress on there network as people will upgrade to 50mb on DOCSIS 3.0 leaving more space for DOCSIS 2

also 50mb will become needed in the future (how many people got 512kb/150kb and were like wow it'll never need to be faster than this) for example legal hd film downloads are already ha[ppening in america

I cant think of anyone worse than Virgin.
After their bombardment of nasty letters to customers, they needed to pull something like this off to get back their customer base.
It is pricey, but in time BT exchanges will follow.

BT won't spend the money.

The only reason LLU exchanges get 24meg is because other ISP's install newer equipment, we could all have up to 24meg if it wasn't for the old DSLAM's in the exhange.

to be fair though, they have spent a staggering amount of money laying the lines only for the government to slap them in the face and demand they charge ISPs very little.

They shouldn't have scripmed in the first place, if they insist on using copper they should upgrade the equipment.

They weren't spending anyway so there will be even less chance with the current economic climate.

All isps throw letters out to customers if they feel they are being too demanding on the network, not just Virgin.

And the only way BT can compete is to either run fibre to the street cabinets (what cable has doing for the last 25years) and then use VDSL2 or run fibre to homes (something which is going to cost around £15bn and they won't do), not their current plans of upgrading the DSLAMs to ADSL2+ - talk about furture proofing

In either case, it's going to be years before BT has a rival product....
