ok guys with christmas coming up and no idea what i want i was in kingston shopping last night and spotted a huge plasma tv playing a blu ray movie ans it looked perfect. the only problem is i have a 32 inch samsung tv thats about 2 years old now and only goes up to 1080i so i wont get true HD. the next thing is i use an xbox 360 as a dvd player and im fairly certain they upscale dvds to 720p so am i going to notice much difference from dvds upscaled to 720p to blu ray at 1080i.
oh and i was lookin at this for a blu ray player

still be worth it..
1080i is interlaced scanning, as apposed to progressive scanning, so it wont we as smooth... but you should still get the clarity.
it'll be 1000 x better than a 480 upscaled image lol.

Just a thought but why not buy a PS3? A bit dearer than that Bluray player but you get the added bonus of a games console aswell?

This why I got a PS3... and ended up playing games more than I watch Blu-Ray's! Surprised myself tbh, PS3 ftw

It also really depends on how often you buy actual DVDs? if you buy alot you would appreciate it more. If like me you download everything then its hardly worth it

bluray is 1080p
PS3 will upscale all your dvd's to 1080p as well, it's an excellent bluray player in its own right so a good choice.

so you would say a ps3 is just as good at playing blu ray/upscaling dvds as that blu ray player i was looking at? i considered a ps3 but seeing as i dont really use my 360 for games anymore it seemed abit pointless but then again i was asuming a blu ray player unit for the same price as a ps3 would be better

Most reviews say the PS3 Blu Ray player is amongst the best.

Generally how good a DVD/TV/BluRay player is at upscaling comes down to the chips inside the box and how good they are.
Just think the PS3 has all that power to spend upscale thus why it can be so good.
There are better BlueRay players out there than the PS3 now for a little less BUT IMO for the value I would spend the extra for the PS3 due to all the added extras. Its also about the best for getting updates too. 'Slight' limitations like at the mo it can't do 8 channel BUT doubt this affects that many people.

would you go for the ps3 if it was your money and you already had a console?
and would you bother at all if your tv was only hd ready at 1080i?
cheers guys

When you say 1080i I take it your tv is a 720p one that accepts a 1080i signal.
720p will be the best picture you get, forget about the 1080i if thats the case.
If you really want a bluray player I wouldn't be looking anywhere outside of a ps3 atm, you get a games console out of it for free.

I would go for a PS3 if I was going to get one. I have a 720P 32" and Projector and while its not 1080 there is still a VERY noticable difference over normal. The likes of Planet earth, Transformers, Iron Man really show off the difference.

erm...
all i know its hd ready, i think its the samsung r27, quite a few people on here bought them a while back when the 360s and ps3 first came out
is it worth me getting a new tv first that is full hd at 1080p?

Naa it'll still look amazing at 720, just don't get caught up with 1080i.
If your TV is 720p, which afaik it is, forget about the 1080i bit, the best picture will be from setting it at 720p.

1080i is the same resoultion, 1920x1080..
just interlaced instead of progressive scanning..
instead of being crystal clear with one pass, it takes 2...
so sport/fast moving action scenes etc wont be as good as 1080p.

Set your BD player to 720p, otherwise your TV will have to scale it down to fit your screen anyway as your screen will only have 720lines if its not full HD

Blu-ray is cool. As ash_corsa said, use 720p rather than 1080i.
You'll notice a difference, but not as much as you would on a 50" panel.
