Im going to start cycling to work again in the new year and rather then pinching the old mans wreck every day I thought I'd invest in a decent bike. The trouble is Im not at all in the know when it comes to what sort of bike I need. I've had a look down halfords and didnt really see anything that took my fancy. Anything that did was too small, Im a tall lad so need a 20" frame. Im looking to spend no more then £300. Any reccomendations?

I've just come across this, was wondering if anyone had any experience with barracuda bikes at all? Cant find any reviews but this seems a good deal.

for that price range i would look at second hand or 2006/2007 bikes new if you can find them.

Ebay is a good resource for cheap bikes, with £300 you are better off looking for a certain spec rather than a name of bike.

Thats the thing mate, I have no idea what Im looking for!!

Any chance you could hook me up with a few suggestions? It needs to be a 20" frame, and i'll be doing about 30 miles a day.

Cheers for your help guys, its generally all road but through alot of resedential areas so will be up and down kurbs a fair bit. All in all I'll be doing a 30 mile round trip everyday. Hope this helps.

these days you can pic up a trek/specialised for 300quid, on cheap bikes its not frame thats the problem its the components, wheels are rubbish, fork top/bottom out very easy which sounds feels annoying, and like said before dont last long.........

id go for trek or something

http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/product/trek4300discmountainbike2009.aspx?&id=9776

alot more but components are better

I bought a Trek 800 for £230 back in 1999, used it for commuting to work for 2 years, didn't fancy a road bike as like has been said about dropping off curbs, a hybrid would have fallen to bits within 6 months!

Has anyone got much to say on this model?

Trek 3900

Seems a decent deal, and collection is fairly accessible to me.

Thanks everyone for the advice too, much appreciated.

Ive jsut bought a 2008 GT aggressor XC1 for £200, very pleased with it. Been out for a bout 2hrs today in wharncliffe woods in Sheffield! I've had a GT before, I cannot fault them, some say they are too heavy, but I don't find it a problem at all, I can lift it above my head with one arm so I can;t think its all that much heavier than other similar bikes. . . .

the 3900 is a pretty decent spec but the 4300 is alot more solid to ride worth the bit extra
