All,

there is no getting away from the fact that you all use Photoshop, however for the beginners what version of photoshop do you use as there are packages out there like photoshop elements?

what would be best to start of building knowledge and skills?

Elements is really just a watered down version. CS4 is the latest version available on PC, although I think CS3 is still the latest for mac. Best to go straight in there imo.

Get a "proper" version of it as opposed to Elements, which as Butler said is just watered down so doesn't have many features. You can start off using the more basic functions in a normal one and then work your way up the more complicated ones when you fancy having a play, otherwise once you've done everything you can in Elements, then you need to buy it again effectively.

Yeah it's not cheap by any means

Seeing as CS4 is out now, CS3 shouldn't be too bad I'd have thought, anyway

I use cs3 extended, don't pay for it, there's plenty of places to get it for free.

Yeah but that's naughty and we'd never do that

I know I wouldn't with various big brand rip off software

The CS3 and 4 icon things are a blue square with PS in white letters, otherwise it's a white box with a feather in it. I think mine says CS3 when it loads so you may have the original CS one

I found out yesterday that there's a feature in cs4 that you can combine multiple images with different focal points, that sounds brilliant so i'll need to get it asap, cs3 extended atm though.

Iirc CS4 has started using the power of the GPU as well as the CPU to make it look better and get faster performance or something
